Snow Machine Season is coming

Our local snowmobile dealer had a big sale last week, and I've been watching people leave with loaded trailers since. The owner is a great guy, keen to educate people on how to have fun and stay safe on their machines. The proper use of safety equipment and getting insured are part of his regular advice.

We've had a few dustings of snow already and riders here in the Region and beyond are getting the machines ready to run. Every year we hear about accidents involving snowmobiles and cars. I thought it would be a good idea to run through the insurance requirements for snowmobiles. You can find more information on the FSCO website.

  • Insurance is required for anyone operating a snowmobile off private property.
  • You must be 16 and have a valid driver's licence, or a motorized snow vehicle operator's licence to drive on a trail.
  • If you are 12 or older you need a motorized snow vehicle operator's licence to drive on a trail.
  • You need $200,000 third party liability coverage, SABs coverage, Direct compensation coverage (DCPD), and uninsured automobile coverage.
  • You may wish to have coverage of loss or damage to your snowmobile.

Insurance rates can vary wildly and snowmobile insurance is a specialty item. Your car insurer may not offer it. Remember that your driving record impacts the rate you'll pay for your snowmobile insurance, and the reverse is also true. Make sure your kids take a snowmobile safety course.

Enjoy your riding this winter.
