Samsung is currently developing technology that will allow us the ability to ‘see through’ the back of transport trucks so that we are better aware of what is happening beyond them on the roadways. Samsung hopes that this new technology will serve to make the roads safer for car drivers and truck drivers, and they plan to do it with giant flat screen TV panels that would be mounted on the back of the transport trailer.
Samsung calls this their ‘safety truck’. It operates using a wireless camera that is mounted on the front grill of the truck and which transmits the signal to the real TV that’s attached to the trailer. This would allow people to see around the trucks on two lane roads in order to pass safely, and to allow drivers to anticipate the traffic flow they are in.
Prototypes ran on the roadways in Argentina, and Samsung is working with industry and governments to determine how this system can be optimized for live road use. They have reportedly developed a night time camera mode as well. The truck ran for one year, and we are awaiting the results of the test to be released. You can read their press releases here.
