Police are investigating an accident along the 401 last weekend in which a man survived the accident but was then killed on the road following the accident. The man had been driving westbound near Kingston when his car struck the median barrier at the centre of the road. He then exited his car and tried to cross the road. It was at that point when he was struck and killed by other cars on the road. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Car accidents on busy stretches of highway are extremely dangerous. There is little room to move your car out of traffic, other cars are travelling at extremely high rates of speed, and they may not see you in time to stop. They may also think you are moving and not even try to stop as they slam into you.

Here are tips for what to do following a car accident on a highway:

  1. Stay calm. Assess the situation.
  2. Call 911 immediately advising them of the situation. Follow any instructions the dispatchers give you.
  3. Put on your hazard lights immediately.
  4. If you can drive the car then pull as far off the highway onto the shoulder.
  5. Check for traffic BEFORE getting out of your car. Only exit if it is necessary or safe.
  6. If you have flares or reflective triangles deploy them to warn other drivers.
  7. If you are able to get out of your car and are on the shoulder of the road get as far away from the road as is practical. Many cars are struck from behind on highways when they are on the shoulder of the road. If you are injured and in a live lane of traffic your safest option is to stay in the car.
