Return to Blog

When it comes to an accident, a spinal cord injury can be one of the most devastating and life altering injuries. For many, a spinal cord injury can completely alter their way of life. Many times, these injuries are permanent. This can be difficult for anyone to have to deal with.

Spinal cord injuries are divided into two categories. Complete spinal cord injury results in the inability to move anything below the part of the spine affected. Incomplete spinal cord injury results in some functioning body parts below the injury point.

Incomplete spinal cord injury is far more common that complete spine injury. Complete spinal cord injury comes in three types tetraplegia, the most severe in which all limb use is lost, paraplegia involves losing complete movement and sensation in the legs, and triplegia which is typically a complication of incomplete spinal cord injury.

/there are approximately 85,000 people with spinal cord injury in Canada according to SCI-BC.ca with 4,500 new cases a year. More than half of all people with spinal cord injury in Canada sustained their injury as a result of traumatic injury (motor vehicle crash, falls etc). The most common causes of spinal cord injury in Canada are:

  • Traumatic injury (car accident, sporting accident, falls, assault)
  • Disease, infection, cancer

Almost half the new injuries are in males 15-39 and come from car accidents, sports accidents and other external causes.
