Head-On Car Accidents – The Facts

Head on car crashes are some of the most deadly types. These accidents can occur when two vehicles travelling in opposite directions crash into one another or they can be a single-vehicle collision involving another object like a bridge abutment, jersey barrier, or tree.

In Ontario hundreds of thousands of car accidents occur every year. According to the MTO in 2019 almost 12,000 people died in a head-on or single-car accidents. More suffered personal injuries. The injuries suffered in head-on crashes can be particularly serious or life-threatening leaving the injured people to apply for personal injury benefits from their auto insurers.

What Causes Head-On Collisions?

  • Distracted driving – eating and drinking, talking, arguing
  • Texting and driving – using a handheld device
  • Impaired driving – drug and alcohol
  • Driver Fatigue – nodding off or falling asleep behind the wheel
  • Swerving to avoid wildlife or striking wildlife, or swerving to avoid unexpected objects on the road
  • Bad Weather – fog and snow can make it difficult to determine where the centre line is or to see oncoming traffic
  • Mechanical Failure – tire blow out
