Spring’s Here – If You’re Riding Your Bicycle Then You Need to Obey Traffic Rules
Return to Blog

Do you know that if you are riding a bicycle you are responsible to follow the same rules of the road as if you are driving a car? If you aren’t and the police stop you then they can fine you just like when you are pulled over driving.

According to the police, it doesn’t matter what you are driving – a bicycle, motorcycle or electric bicycle or car, if you are on the road then obey the rules! Cyclists should be warned that they face the same fines as a car driver but no demerit points against a driver licence.

The next time you are out riding your bike think about that before you blow through a stop sign. Most cyclists don’t stop at them and yet if the police stop you the fine will be $110. Drinking and cycling? It’s illegal as well.

Under the Highway Traffic Act bicycles are considered vehicles, and cyclists are required to stop and identify themselves to the police if pulled over.

To make sure you don’t get a ticket and that you stay safe while cycling follow these guidelines:

  • Obey the rules of the road
  • Ride close to the curb
  • Wear a helmet
  • Wear brightly coloured clothes
  • Make sure you have a flashing LED taillight for day and night riding, and a headlight for night riding.
  • Use your bell to warn pedestrians and other cyclists when you are passing them

Accidents on bikes happen and they are often NOT the fault of the cyclist. Statistics show that in accidents where the cyclists are injured they are at fault about 50% of the time.

If you are injured in an accident while riding your bike involving another vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist you may be eligible for personal injury benefits. These cases can be complex and you should seek the expertise and guidance of an experienced personal injury lawyer like the ones at Deutschmann Personal Injury Law. We’ll work hard to get you the benefits that you need to recover from your injuries.
