Drama Wins Over Animation Giant
Kathryn Bigelow was stunned last night when she took home Oscars for her directorial role as well as best picture edging out Avatar. Perhaps more stunned was James Cameron, the former husband of Bigelow, who probably thought that the academy would follow the money trail as is so often the case in Tinseltown. While Avatar is the biggest box office success in the history of the motion picture business, it just makes sense that the academy might choose a true story drama over the blockbuster animation. The Oscar show itself ran very long. And while the co-hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were funny and entertaining there was a disconnect between them and those presenting because of a disorganized show format. After enduring more than four hours, there was virtually no build up to the biggest categories. Tom Hanks walks out and opens the best picture category envelop and says "And the Oscar goes to..." and that was it. Meryl Streep once again suffered the indignity of being nominated (for a 16th time) only to lose to Sandra Bullock. There just weren't enough heart strings to pull on her true story portrayal of French Cooking icon Julia Child.
